After the attack, the whereabouts of DCP Abba Kyari became a subject of controversy among members of the public. The former super cop was later confirmed to be in custody and narrated to Vanguard how the incident happened.

He revealed that the terrorists, who were about 300, stormed the prison with sophisticated armaments and operated for 2 hours and 45 minutes. The former super cop said that it was only God that saved them.

Kyari added that over 90% of the inmates escaped, stating that out of 1476 inmates at Kuje prison, only 111 refused to escape. He went further to say that "former governor Jolly Nyame of Taraba State, Farouk Lawal, Abba Kyari and four of his officers, retired AVM, and also 107 other inmates who have less than three months to finish their jail term" were the only people who didn't attempt to flee during the attack.

If Kyari's narration is anything to go by, then citizens of the country ought to be cautious because many hardened criminals are currently let loose.
