Horror Frog: Video meet The Hairy Frog That Breaks Its Bones To Create Claws

 The Horror frog which is also known as "the Wolverine frog" or "the hairy frog" is a central African species of frogs which belongs to the Arthroleptidae family and also the Trichobatrachus genus.


They are brown in colour, with irregular black spots on their bodies. Adult males grow larger than the females, growing to about 10-13cm (4-5in) long from snout to vent; while the females grow to about 8-11cm (3-4.5in) long.

According to Wikipedia, they live in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, arable land, rivers, plantations, and heavily degraded former forest; and are found in Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, and somehow in Angola.

Hairy frogs are known to be carnivores feeding primarily on insects and mollusks, like snails and slugs.

Are they edible?


In Cameroon, this species are hunted with long spears or machetes and eaten after being roasted.


Why do they break their bones?


According to Nationalgeographic.com, one of the striking character of the hairy frog is possessing retractable "claws", which it may project through the skin, apparently by intentionally breaking the bones of the toe. These are not true claws, as they are made of bone, not keratin.


What is the claws used for?


These claws are used for defence, when they are threatened, hairy frogs will force these bones through their skin, by breaking their own toes. And the tissues eventually heals once the threat has passed.


Why do they have hairs?



According to A-Z-Animals.com, the hairs help during reproduction, as the males uses their “hairs” to absorb more oxygen while staying in the water to protect the eggs until they hatch.
